Second year

NST Part IB
The information below relates to the courses in the 2025-26 academic year. Current students can visit the NST CourseHub for more information. Students thinking of applying to start NST in 2026 should look at the information on the NST website for the revised courses.
NST Part IB Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (BMB)
The BMB course builds on NST Part IA Biology of Cells. It adopts a moderately sophisticated and strongly molecular approach to the concepts, knowledge base and methodologies needed to elucidate core themes and topics of modern biochemistry and molecular biology. The varied practical programme includes laboratory experiments and their discussion, introduction to hands-on computational molecular biology, and journal clubs.
NST Part IB Cell & Developmental Biology (CDB)
This inter-departmental CDB course complements BMB by providing a view on cellular processes that is less molecular than BMB, and it progresses towards consideration of developmental processes of plants and animals. The Biochemistry Department contributes to the yeast genetics, membrane traffic, and bioinformatic components of the course.
