The Department's buildings are currently open for wet laboratory work only. We have carried out a comprehensive COVID-19 risk assessment process and have introduced a number of new measures to ensure the safety of our staff, including reduced building occupancy, strict social distancing, 'family'-based working, and increased cleaning and hygiene regimes. All staff who can work remotely will do so for the foreseeable future. Please continue to contact us by email until further notice.

Department of Biochemistry

A postgraduate student working on their research project.

Prospective postgraduate students should identify one or more research groups and/or named postgraduate programmes that they wish to apply to. Points of contact for each of our research groups can be found on our Research Group Leaders' profile pages. When making contact with a research group, prospective students will need to explain their motivation for undertaking postgraduate training and determine if the group is able to offer a potential postgraduate position in their laboratory. To facilitate initial discussions, prospective students should provide the research group with a single page personal statement, their up-to-date CV, and contact information for two academic references.

Upon obtaining approval from a potential supervisor, prospective students will then need to apply formally through the University's postgraduate admissions process via the Applicant Portal.

Some specialised PhD programmes are available and these may have additional application procedures, for example see the link for the MRC Doctoral Training Programme (DTP). Additionally, the School of the Biological Sciences (SBS) DTP, the Cambridge/AstraZeneca PhD Programme and other opportunities are advertised annually in December via the Department's studentships page. The FindAPhD website will also provide information on available positions in the Department.
