Juan Mata and Caia Duncan have published a paper in Nature Molecular Structural Biology entitled "The translational landscape of fission yeast meiosis and sporulation". They used a method called ribosome profiling to obtain a systematic and high resolution view of translation in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. They found large numbers of unannotated translated regions, including novel genes, genes previously annotated as non-coding, and parts of the genome that encode proteins in both strands. Although the fission yeast genome and proteome have been extensively characterised, these results suggest that S. pombe cells produce hundreds of previously unknown short proteins that may have important biological functions.
