Markus Ralser's group, working with colleagues in Earth Sciences, have published a paper in the journal Molecular Systems Biology in which they propose that chemical reactions typical of the metabolism we associate with living organisms may have started to occur before the advent of life, rather than enzymes being a pre-requisite.
