CUSU Student-Led Teaching Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to Dr Mairi Kilkenny on being commended for undergraduate supervision.

Dr Mairi Kilkenny, a Senior Research Associate in the Pellegrini Group and Teaching Fellow/Director of Studies at St. Catharine's College, has been commended in the category of Undergraduate Supervisor (Science and Technology) in the Cambridge University Students' Union (CUSU) Student-Led Teaching Awards.

Speaking after the awards ceremony at Senate House, Mairi said: "A huge thank you to my students for nominating me. Every week I get to discuss the inner workings of the cell, and how researchers tackle complex biological problems, with groups of immensely talented students. It is challenging, fun and I really learn a lot from it every year – it is great to hear that the students feel the same way."

This year, a massive 591 nominations were received from students who wanted to recognise the hard work that staff put in at the University and the difference they make to students' experiences.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, Graham Virgo, commented that: "The Student-Led Teaching Awards is an important event in the collegiate University's calendar celebrating as it does those who teach, those who support teaching and learning, and those who provide pastoral and other support to students. Receiving an award or being nominated for an award is a particular honour since it reflects the appreciation of those who have actually benefited from teaching and learning support at Cambridge."

The CUSU Student-Led Teaching Awards is an annual event run by the Students' Union that aims to acknowledge and reward the profound impact those who teach, those who support teaching and learning, and those who provide pastoral and other support to students has on students' time at the University of Cambridge. The judging of nominations is carried out by panels comprised wholly of students, many of whom are faculty representatives, held JCR Welfare Officer positions or have roles on CUSU's liberation campaigns.
