Department of Biochemistry

Riley Brown receives his National Vocational Qualification certificate.

Congratulations to Riley Brown who has completed his National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).

Riley Brown joined the Department to undertake a technician apprenticeship straight after his GCSEs at Birchwood High School at the age of 16. Riley's apprenticeship saw him spending the majority of his time in the Department learning the ropes in the teaching classrooms, alongside placements in research groups to develop additional skills. His college course also included an IOSH qualification which gave him an excellent overview of health and safety.

Riley has now completed his National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and was presented with his certificate yesterday in the Hopkins Common Room. He said: "I've really enjoyed the course and I'm looking forward to developing my skills further and becoming a useful resource to the Department. Everyone here has been great to work with. It was difficult at first to adapt to working straight from school but with Sio's help and guidance I now feel more confident; I've really grown as a person."

Riley is currently assigned to Svetlana Khoronenkova's research group to provide technical support for part of the week. For the remainder of the week, Riley is working with Helen Mott and Darerca Owen's group. He added: "I've really enjoyed working with everyone."
