The Department's buildings are currently open for wet laboratory work only. We have carried out a comprehensive COVID-19 risk assessment process and have introduced a number of new measures to ensure the safety of our staff, including reduced building occupancy, strict social distancing, 'family'-based working, and increased cleaning and hygiene regimes. All staff who can work remotely will do so for the foreseeable future. Please continue to contact us by email until further notice.

Our students are funded in a wide range of ways:

  • Studentships available to work with specific principal investigators eg funded by UK Research Council CASE awards or EU grants: these may be advertised via our Home page on the University Jobs web site (see the link to Studentships) with details of eligibility etc. and are generally to be found in FindaPhD.
  • Research assistant posts with specific principal investigators: these are similarly advertised
  • Studentships available through four-year PhD programmes (eg Biosciences, Developmental Mechanisms and Stem Cell Biology) are advertised by the programmes and by the University on the central Jobs website (see link to Studentships).
  • Scholarships/studentships/bursaries are available from University Trusts and Colleges and there are various options for Home, EU and Overseas students and for various subject specialities: more information is available via the link to University finance information. This includes a searchable funding database.
  • Scholarships and other types of funding may be available from students' own countries: seek advice locally
  • Funding is also available from relevant learned societies: principal investigators may be able to help advise you
  • Self-funding, from savings or family contribution is also possible.

Potential students should start to research funding sources a year or more ahead of when they hope to start their degree programme, and note the different deadlines for funding, which determine when they need to apply.
