We are delighted to announce that James Thaventhiran has been appointed as Professor in the Department of Biochemistry.
Over the past year, each of the six Research Themes within the School of Biological Sciences conducted an international search to identify outstanding individuals who would strengthen and enrich our research programmes. James was selected as the successful candidate by the Molecules and Cells Theme, and I am thrilled that he has chosen Biochemistry as the host department for his Professorship.
James's expertise in vaccination science sits at the heart of preventative medicine, protecting billions of people from disease worldwide. His research group investigates the critical questions of when and why vaccines succeed or fail, why certain populations respond differently to vaccination, and how mRNA vaccines can be optimised to improve both efficacy and safety. This work complements our existing strengths in RNA biology perfectly and adds an exciting translational dimension to the department.
We are particularly fortunate to welcome a clinician-scientist who bridges basic research and clinical medicine so effectively. James's appointment represents a significant addition to our research capability and academic community.
