Congratulations to our former colleague John McCafferty, on being elected Fellow of The Royal Society and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
These prestigious honours reflect John’s lasting impact on the biomedical field and his outstanding scientific contributions. From pioneering phage display to helping transform antibody medicines, his work has shaped a field that benefits millions worldwide.
John has founded three biotechnology companies (Maxion Therapeutics, Cambridge Antibody Technology and IONTAS) and he says: "my principal driver every time was a love of science; I followed a path to pursue that love of science, and this pathway involving hopping between academic and commercial science.”
His advice to the entrepreneurs of the future is: “Find something that you can get passionate about. It is easy to say and hard to do, but if you can do that it makes the rest of the journey so much easier. That passion, together with some resilience, makes it much easier to navigate and overcome the inevitable bumps in the road. You also need to be willing to take a risk sometimes.”
