Congratulations to the Hyvönen Group on its celebration of a big birthday this week! On Saturday, some 40 alumni came to the Department to celebrate its achievements and to meet old friends and colleagues. Later in the evening the Group, alumni, friends, colleagues and collaborators continued the festivities at Kettle’s Yard.
Over the last 25 years, the Group has welcomed 21 Postdoctoral research associates, 8 Research assistants,15 PhD students, 6 Visiting PhD students, 9 MPhil/MSc students and 46 Undergraduate and summer students.
Since it started in 2001, the Hyvönen Group has contributed to over 90 publications and deposited well over 300 crystal structures to Protein Data Bank. It has been funded by over 15 major grants and founded the highly successful spin-out company Qkine.
Within its mission to use biochemical, biophysical and structural techniques to understand how various signalling proteins interact with other signalling molecules, the Group has specialised in studying the structure and function of TGF-beta family growth factors, with a particular focus on activins. It has provided high-quality growth factors and other protein-based tools for the stem cell research and collaborated widely with other university laboratories and industrial partners.
The Hyvönen Group has been a key participant in our Department community and made large contributions to the University of Cambridge and beyond. Happy Birthday!
