Mariana Rangel Pereira

Background and Current Projects: I graduated in Biological Sciences (B.S and B.A) at the São Paulo State University (Unesp), Brazil. My master's degree and Ph.D were obtained in Biotechnology at University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. The topic of my Ph.D project was about functional metagenomics aiming at applications in biofuel, flavorings and bioremediation and led to the identification and characterization of new lipolytic enzymes. Part of my PhD work was done in collaboration with Marko Hyvönen at the University of Cambridge.
In my current project, metagenomic libraries from different environmental sources will be screened for lipases, laccases and proteases using high-throughput droplet-based assays. Hopefully, this work will lead to the identification and characterization of previously unrecorded biocatalysts that could prove useful for biotechnological applications.
