Søren Svenningsen



During my studies as a Bachelor student in Biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen, I found particular interest in synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. Therefore, I designed my bachelor’s degree in order to be able to apply for the Master of Science programme in medicinal chemistry.
In 2016 I graduated as Master in Medicinal Chemistry with a specialization in organic chemistry from University of Copenhagen, Denmark. After end education, I was employed as research assistant at Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen followed by a short internship at the Danish Technical University.
During my studies and employment, I have built up an extended knowledge and practical hands on experience in the field of Synthetic Organic chemistry. I have worked with various topics, all with synthetic organic chemistry in common. Many of the projects have focused on the synthesis and development of new compounds with antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. My main topics during my studies have been:

  • Synthesis and characterization of phospholipids for biomimetic functionalization of PAMAM dendrimers
  • Dendrimer functionalization and multivalent drug conjugates
  • Synthesis of conjugated antibiotics against multi resistant bacteria
  • Synthesis of a new Histone Demethylase Inhibitor (epigenetics)
  • Synthesis of new derivatives of phenoxazines, phenothiazines and    Sertraline.
  • Multivalent drug derivatives with anti-inflammatory properties
  • SPPS of poly lysine dendrons  with antibacterial properties

Many of the projects are finished and are about to be published within the near future.

Research Projects:
My Ph.D. project aims to create RNA/DNA cleaving agents with highly localized activities. The cleaving agents will be based on metal binding units which will be incorporated into different positions in RNA and DNA strands to achieve proper and selective cleavage. In this way, different RNA/DNA strands will be synthesized from natural and artificial nucleotides based on a synthetic organic approach.  Such selective DNA cleaving agents could find relevant applications in all places where a genome is present, for example in treatment of cancer, bacteria and viruses.
