Equality & Diversity in the Department of Biochemistry

"Embracing an Inclusive Working Environment"

As a Department we are committed to ensuring that we have a proactive and inclusive approach to equality, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture, and values diversity.

"The University's diversity plays a key role in sustaining its academic excellence"    Vice Chancellor, Sir Leszek Borysiewicz

In recognition of the Department's commitment to progressing equality and diversity, we were awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze Award in 2014.

Athena SWAN

The Athena SWAN charter was initially created to recognise and celebrate good practice in the recruitment, retention and promotion of women in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine).  Since May 2015, the charter was expanded to work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBHL), and also in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students.

Since receiving the Athena SWAN Bronze Award in 2014,  a number of new initiatives have been put into place within the Department of Biochemistry as part of our commitment to providing an inclusive working environment for all members of the Department. These initiatives are largely directed by our Departmental Equality & Diversity Committee, whose members represent a cross-section of the Department. The Terms of Reference of the E&D committee are available here.
