Biochemistry Computer Support Services The Biochemistry Computer Support Services supports and maintains the network infrastructure of the Department of Biochemistry. We assure the correct communication of computer equipment within as well as between the two Biochemistry buildings. We also ensure connection of the Biochemistry Local Area Network to the Cambridge University Data Network, JANET and the Internet. In close liaison with the University Computing Service we try to safeguard the network from intruders and improper use. The Department has a huge variety hardware and software platforms ranging from high end UNIX workstations and servers to ordinary Macs and PCs running different operating systems and many different software packages. Despite this big variety we aim to provide general first line hardware and software support for all users in the Department and offer a basic level of user tuition for commonly used computing facilities and packages.
We advise and assist scientific and non scientific staff in the purchase of computer equipment and provide a purchasing service for computer hardware and for software licenses for use within the Department. We aim to develop and provide technical support for computer facilities for teaching and learning and also support and maintain publicly available computers like those in different parts of the library. We hope to develop and operate central computing services as central application serving and data archive facilities in the near future. Colleague
