The Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry (PNAC) Facility

Research Groupings: Structural and molecular cell biology, Functional genomics, systems biology and genetic medicine

The Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry (PNAC) Facility is a laboratory offering centralised specialist services and research support for the biological departments of the University. The Facility is managed by Dr Packman and it employs one senior technician and one research assistant, each of whom specialises in one area of analytical science but has broader experience of other techniques. The service element of the laboratory is to provide peptide synthesis, protein sequence analysis, amino acid analysis and mass spectrometry. With its strong emphasis on quality, the PNAC Facility has built a good reputation for careful analysis and superior synthetic products. Where resources permit, Dr Packman and his staff contribute collaboratively to longer-term research studies with groups within this University, local Biotechnology Industries and other Universities.

mass spectraThe mass spectrometry work of the PNAC Facility complements that of the Cambridge Centre for Proteomics by analysing intact proteins and examining domain structures as a result of limited proteolysis. This technique is also used to confirm the identity of cloned and expressed proteins, identify post-translational and chemical modifications and to analyse peptides, oligonucleotides and novel organic molecules. The future of the unit will be to invest further in instrumentation while continuing to provide the services so essential to research in this University.
