General Risk Assessments
You must assess every procedure you undertake or any equipment you use for potential risks to health and decide how to minimise that risk.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recommend that there are 5 steps to Risk Assessment:
Step 1: Look for the hazards
Step 2: Decide who might be harmed and how
Step 3: Evaluate the risks and decide whether the existing precautions are adequate or whether more should be done
Step 4: Record your findings
Step 5: Review your assessment and revise it if necessary
An HSE advice leaflet is available here.
Other useful HSE leaflets (pdf): back pain | lifting and manual handling | new / expectant mothers | stress in the workplace | repetitive strain disorders | working with VDU screens

File information
The file will decompress to a folder containing a full set of Risk Assessments (RA) which are listed below. You may adopt these or adapt them to your own circumstances. If a generic RA does not exist here, please write a new one and send a copy to Len Packman

Guidance on filling in forms
- Remember to review your assessment annually, or sooner if procedures change
- They are similar in style to the COSHH forms with header/footer areas which will transfer information to multiple pages.
- Move the column divider as needed to minimise white space.
- Create more rows by pressing return with the cursor at the end of a row (outside the box)
- Delete excess rows when you have finished to tidy up and minimise number of pages
- Arial font 10 looks neat. Only reduce to a smaller font if necessary to fit.
-
Use indent to separate paragraphs as bullet points are rather tedious and space-hungry.

PC format files - you may need PKZIP or WinZip installed on your PC to open these.
